Test Windows Server Backup Recovery

A backup is useful only when its contents can be located and restored. This walkthrough checks Windows Server Backup versions, reviews the recovery catalog, and restores a sample file to a separate test folder so the live copy remains untouched.

Use a non-production test file and a backup target you are authorized to access. Confirm retention, encryption, and recovery-point requirements with the system owner.

01

Inventory Backups Before Opening the Recovery Wizard

Backup Inventory

Open the Windows Server Backup console with wbadmin.msc, or query the target from an elevated shell. Confirm the target is expected and record the version identifier shown by the system.

Terminal window
wbadmin get versions -backupTarget:E:
❯ View Expected Console Output
Version identifier: 10/03/2026-22:00
Can Recover: Volume(s), File(s), Application(s), System State
Backup location: E:

02

Confirm the Recovery Point Contains the Expected Item

Catalog Check

In the wizard, select the backup date, recovery type, and original volume. Browse to a harmless sample file and verify its path and timestamp before restoring.

Terminal window
wbadmin get items -version:10/03/2026-22:00 -backupTarget:E:
❯ View Expected Console Output
Items available for recovery:
File: C:\Shares\Operations\restore-test.txt

03

Keep the Original Path Unchanged During the Drill

Safe Restore

Choose Another location in the recovery wizard and restore the test file beneath a dedicated recovery-test folder. Do not choose the option that overwrites the original during validation.

Terminal window
New-Item -ItemType Directory -Path C:\RestoreTest -Force | Out-Null
❯ View Expected Console Output
Recovered item: C:\RestoreTest\restore-test.txt
Original source: C:\Shares\Operations\restore-test.txt

04

Check Content, Metadata, and Access

Recovery Validation

Compare the restored file with a known checksum or expected contents, confirm that the test account can read it, and record the selected recovery point and elapsed time.

Terminal window
Get-Item C:\RestoreTest\restore-test.txt | Select-Object FullName, Length, LastWriteTime
Get-FileHash C:\RestoreTest\restore-test.txt -Algorithm SHA256
❯ View Expected Console Output
Algorithm : SHA256
Hash : <compare with the approved reference value>
Path : C:\RestoreTest\restore-test.txt
